BF Community Toastmasters Club Contest 2008-2019

It was a two thumbs-up for me as we concluded the Speech Contests for BF Community Toastmasters Club today at the club's regular venue in Las Piñas City. Our efforts to prepare for this in the Dec.22 Club Contest Planning with Pres. Ching paid off!

Attending the club contest were (L-R): Standing: DTM Nona Hermogenes (Test Speaker), Leah Catapia, Nelle Cirujales, Ed Ramirez, Marlyn Malinao, guest Bianza Escolar, Russell Santos, AD Anne Macalintal, DTM Raul de la Vega, Loise Bañez, Bea Indonto, Leonzo Escolar and me. Seated: Ching Bognot, Dolly de los Reyes, Duchess Munsayac, DTM Rema Manzano, Cristina Yung and DTM Beth Pableo.

Lunch Before the Club Contest

Lunch was served buffet-style at the Cassalu main restaurant before the contest started at the function room. I had a hearty lunch at the table with DTMs Nona and Raul (shown below).

I knew I won't be able to have anything else during the breaks. After all, it was my first time as a contest chair and will be having my hands full today.

Contest Chair Role

We started a bit late at 2 pm. against the targeted 1:30 pm. to wait for others still having lunch. So I knew I had to adjust. I'm glad I shortened the contest chair script for my version.

The contests I chaired were for all the four categories: Evaluation, Humorous, Table Topics and International Prepared. I thought it was a bit daunting for first-timer. Other clubs would typically split all four categories into 2, 3, or even 4 contest chairs.

So, just to simplify matters, what I did was to create my own condensed script from the other scripts shared to me. I occasionally glanced at this script (below right) to ensure I was on track with the proceedings of all four contests.

Aside from discussing the contest mechanics for all the four contests, I called and introduced each of the contestants in the manner prescribed by the contest rules.

Shown below is Contestant Leah after I introduced her for her Evaluation speech in the Evaluation category.

One of the perks of being a contest chair is enjoying the speeches. I just listened and didn't have to write notes, as I always did, as an evaluator.

Shown below is funny girl Bea giving her Humorous prepared speech entitled, "Twinception", as I sat by the lectern to listen. She was one of two contestants in the Humorous category.

Presenting the Certificates of Participation

All contestants in the four categories did very well. One of my duties was to present and give the Certificates of Participation to all contestants. This was done after all the contests.

Below, Toastmaster of the Day, Duchess, assists me in presenting the certificates. She also did a wonderful job in interviewing all the contestants prior to the awarding of certificates. Thank you, VP-Membership Duchess!

Shown below are the four contestants in the Evaluation category (L-R): Nelle, Loise, Leah and Russell. Then there's me, Division Director Dolly and VP-Membership Duchess.

In the second category, Humorous, there were two contestants: Ed and Bea.

For the Table Topics category, there were four contestants: Russell, Leonzo, Bea and Ed.

And for the last category, International Prepared, it was Ed and Loise.

Awarding of Club Contest Winners

Finally, for the awarding of winners, Tita Rema and Pres. Ching joined us. This time, it was our powerhouse Club President Ching who announced the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners to receive the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, respectively.

Me, I mostly led in the applause as shown below. Haha.

I also assisted our energetic Division Director Dolly in awarding the medals. And yes, as shown below, we handed out the Toastmasters International Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

For the Evaluation Contest, the winners were: Leah, Russell and Loise (1st, 2nd and 3rd).

For Humorous Contest: Ed and Bea.

For Table Topics Contest: Russell, Ed and Bea.

For International Prepared: Ed and Loise.

Adjournment and Pictorials

The club thanked our guests who took roles as judges and contest test speaker: Raul, Anne and Nona, and everyone else who took time to assist and make this club contest a success.

I, for one, felt that the club contest success exceeded my expectations. I saw everyone in the audience enjoy the speeches. Even the contestants all looked cool and relaxed.

Maybe it was the relaxed atmosphere. The shortened scripts that I prepared took off the too-serious ambiance of a contest. It also made sure there was adequate time for breaks. In fact, after the first two contests, we were already ahead of time.

Or, maybe everyone just enjoyed the food that was served! But, certainly, there was nothing better than adequate preparation. Pres. Ching and I had a club contest meeting last December 22, 2018 to make sure we will be prepared.

To rally the club members towards the forthcoming area contest, we posed for this final "Fight!" group picture. To everyone, congratulations!!!

And that's... a wrap!
