Toastmasters Signal Lights for Timing Speeches - Part 3

(This is the continuation of Part 2 -Toastmasters Signal Lights for Timing Speeches)

The Toastmasters timing lights device cost me Php 800 - still relatively cheap. This was negotiated down from the original quoted price of Php 1500. Cost of materials (LED lights, box, wires, switch, etc.) was estimated at Php 400.

But still, the lack of brightness coming from the ping-pong "bulbs" is a major issue for me.

For one of the lamps, I removed the blue threaded plastic part where the ping-pong ball was glued. It exposed the two LED lights.

Toastmasters Signal Lights for Timing Speeches - Part 2

(This is the continuation of Part 2 - Toastmasters Signal Lights for Timing Speeches)

The timing lights device box was lightweight and seemed empty. When I got home I opened it to see how the inside looked like and where to replace the batteries.

Yes, the LED lights are all battery-operated.

The box is easily collapsible. All detachable parts of the box are actually held together by just a couple of screws at the bottom of the box. You only need a Phillips-type screwdriver to disassemble.

Toastmasters Signal Lights for Timing Speeches

Ever since I joined Toastmasters, I don't recall seeing a timing lights device being used either in my present club or in the previous one. If at all, the timers used colored cards or some other items.

Of course, it is different when it comes to Toastmasters competitions at the area (or above) levels. You can be sure that signalling lights for timing Toastmasters speeches would be available.

Usually, the sponsoring club or one other competing club will be bringing their own timing device for use. When I see these timing lights, I actually become envious. They look professionally made and look so cool.

INTRODUCTION

Several weeks ago at the start of this month, many of us visited the cemeteries or memorial parks to observe All Saint’s Day. Unlike many people though, my family and I always choose to visit the cemetery on the second day, All Soul’s day.

And the reason is to avoid the crowds and traffic. Now if you’re like us, there are only three things we bring to the cemetery for the dead. And these are prayers, candles and flowers.

Several weeks ago, Ma’m Lolet here asked me for copies of a couple of my speeches. I asked her if she had access to the Internet. And she said “Yes, of course I have access.”

And I said “Great, that means I don’t even have to email you word documents.” And so, rather than send her documents, I sent her a URL.

Improvised Toastmasters Pin Holder with Clip

After receiving my Competent Communicator pin from Toastmasters, I planned to wear it regularly in Toastmasters club meetings. After all, what better way to promote Toastmasters than to wear it with pride?

Wear Your Toastmasters Pin with Pride

A Toastmasters pin can easily become a conversation piece. When someone asks about it, you can talk about how you got into Toastmasters, enumerate its benefits, and then later promote the organization and your club.

The Folk Tale-Sample Speech, "Noah's Bird"

Noah's Bird
(The Folk Tale, Advanced Speech Project #1 in the Storytelling Manual, May.17,2007, ACT Club, Henlin, Northgate Alabang. Evaluated by Dr. Neil Caranto}

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered why the Crow or the "Uwak", as we call it, has such a bad reputation? This bad reputation is often highlighted in fables or fairy tales.

Somehow this bird is always portrayed as ugly, greedy and generally unpleasant to be with. Now I’m sure that there are many folk tales to explain this bad reputation, but the version that I like best is one that uses a reference from the Bible.

BODY

Who has heard of the story about Noah’s Ark? Okay, everybody has heard of it. It’s about God creating a Big Flood to destroy mankind which has become wicked. But there was a good man named Noah that God wanted to save.

But this story isn’t so much about Noah nor is it about the Ark. It’s about a bird, the Crow in particular, and how it came to appear as we know it today.

The interested guests were treated over dinner. The speaker reflects on how it feels like to be a newcomer and how it is to be delivering the Icebreaker speech and the first few speeches in the Basic Toastmasters manual.
