INTRODUCTION

The Devil’s Gardens. What thoughts does the phrase evoke for you? Could it be the name of a religious ritual? Another Dan Brown moneymaker perhaps? – ala Da Vinci Code? No… no… It’s none of those. (long pause)

What I’m about to tell you is a strange phenomenon that takes place deep in the heart of the jungles of the Amazon Rainforest in Western Peru.

Club-Hopping at KCPI, San Pedro, Laguna - Research Your Topic

It's another club-hopping day for me as I went back to Kimberly-Clark to deliver my Research Your Topic speech project entitled, "Because it is There!". My Toastmasters club on ON Semiconductor hardly meets anymore and I am now just relying on opportunities to club-hop and deliver my speeches.

Khris Albano was today's General Evaluator and also evaluated my speech. He was one of the contestants in the Speech Evaluation Contest where I was Test Speaker and delivered my Get to the Point speech.

INTRODUCTION

Oracion, Emata, Garduce: three Filipinos who have made headlines just very recently. Do you know them? If you have been tuning in to the news lately, these three names spell triumph. They’re the first Filipinos to climb the highest peak on earth, Mount Everest.

As any mountaineer can attest, climbing Mount Everest is a supremely dangerous undertaking. The most frequent kind of death is sudden and shocking, a drop from a wall of ice, a fall into a deep crevice, or the biggest killer of all, being buried alive in an avalanche.

Practically one in every ten climbers never return and there have been more than 2000 climbers thus far. The fact that these 3 Filipinos had limited experience in snow and ice climbing made their feats even more admirable.

Because I liked my previous speech so much and because it had a positive feedback, I decided to take on the same speech again. I tweaked the previous speech and retitled it as "Learn-to-Swim" for the Vocal Variety speech project and delivered it while club-hopping at the KCPI (Kimberly-Clark Philippines Inc.) Toastmasters Club.

Evaluating me was the General Evaluator, Doc Noy. In the speech, I felt that the discourse between the Rehab doctor and the patient could have been highlighted more to illustrate vocal variety. Doc Noy liked the storytelling approach based on personal experience that resulted in good mastery of the speech.

INTRODUCTION

Think summer. When we talk of summer vacation and outings here in the Philippines, many would think of the three S’s… and sex isn’t one of them. It’s “sand, sea and the sun” – the beach!

And how do we cool off?

By swimming or taking a cool dip in the water. It’s definitely fun going swimming, especially if you do know how to swim.

May 17, 2006 Toastmasters Meeting - Your Body Speaks

As it was on a Wednesday, this speech was delivered in a "bare-bones" meeting at the Clinic. Attending was a nurse and Doc Noy. There was no meeting program prepared for this meeting. For this Your Body Speaks speech project, I used a swimming topic and this speech would be the first having the swimming theme. The speech is entitled "Let's Go Swimming".

Doc Noy the Evaluator liked the easy-to-follow speech. The speech had an attention-getting opening and the body was well-outlined. To satisfy the objectives, I had plenty of gestures. The skills learned previously in past speech projects were incorporated here. As the speech had a pleasant and positive message, my smile helped express it.

INTRODUCTION

Think summer. When we talk of summer vacation and outings here in the Philippines, many would think of the three S’s… and sex isn’t one of them. It’s “sand, sea and the sun” – the beach! And how do we cool off? By swimming or taking a cool dip in the water.

It’s definitely fun going swimming, especially if you do know how to swim. For me, I took up swimming lessons at a very late age – only 6 years ago. But lately, I’ve been learning and relearning. Why this new found enthusiasm for swimming?

Three things: One, I realized swimming can be a lifelong activity. Two, swimming could save your life (knock on wood). And three, it’s fun!
